Michael Quereau thinks he’s discovered something “weird”: newspapers mentioned roughly six million Jews before 1945.
Yes, Michael. Newspapers sometimes reported how many Jews were facing persecution, poverty, displacement or danger. Europe had approximately 9.5 million Jewish residents in 1933 alone, including about 5.5 million in Poland and the Soviet Union. References to millions of endangered Jews weren’t predictions of a future murder count—they were estimates of living populations in peril.
The Holocaust’s death toll wasn’t copied from an old headline. Historians reconstructed it using surviving Nazi documents, deportation records, demographic studies, mass-shooting reports and records from ghettos and killing centres.
Quereau found the same round number in two different historical contexts and promoted himself from Facebook commenter to biblical numerologist.
Next week he’ll discover that newspapers mentioned millions of Canadians before 1945 and conclude Canada was foretold in Revelation.
